Miniature Stellar "Crystal West"
The miniature stellar "Crystal West" is another introduced by the late Brian West and named for a family member,  The single white flowers are speckled and splashed with a dark salmon colour.   The leaves are a dark green.  "Crystal West" is a cross between "Brading" and "Golden Starburst" and was introduced through Denmead Nursery.  I find this one flowers all summer long.

The third small pelargonium nursery I visited was at the home of Paul and Annette Sabel who live at  Port Elliott, South Australia.  Like the Frahn's, Paul and Annette grow their pelargoniums in polytunnels and sell their plants at local plant sales in the early summer.  The profits of their sales go to a national charity.  Paul and Annette have a beautiful garden, and also keep chickens (or chooks).  We were given a box of fresh eggs to take home, which was most generous.

The basic stellar"Faye Brawner" has unusual white flowers speckled with pale pink, darker pink and purple, and is a cross between Bobberstone and Purple Star.  The leaves are green.

Brian West named this for the well known pelargonium plants woman Faye Brawner.  Faye herself has hybridised many pelargoniums, and is an avid collector of these lovely plants.  She has written two books on pelargoniums.  One is Scented Geraniums - Knowing, Growing and Enjoying Scented Pelargoniums, which she wrote with Jim Becker.  The other is Geraniums - the complete Encyclopaedia.  Both these books are well worth adding to you library.

"Copthorne" - Scented leaf Pelargonium

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how I love scented leaf pelargoniums, especially at this time of year when botrytis rules in the greenhouse, and there always seems to be a constant battle with  it.   Brushing against the leaves, of a scented pelargonium, or even just picking one up in its pot, releases the scent of summer.

Scented Pelargonium  "Copthorne"
The scented Pelargonium "Copthorne", is a favourite of mine.  It has beautifully marked large pink flowers and looks really good in a large pot on the patio,.  I try to keep one going in a large pot in  the greenhouse over the winter.  I cut it back in the autumn, taking a few cutting at the same time.   Now the days are beginning, ever so slightly, to lengthen,  I can see that Pelargonium "Copthorne" is beginning to put on some new growth.

The leaves are tri-lobed with a scent of cedar wood, but not strongly so.  I love it for the large pink and well marked flowers.   Pelargonium "Copthorne" is a cross between the Regal “Aztec” and an “Oak leaf pelargonium, was raised by Annie Popperwell .   Thorpe nursery introduced Copthorne in 1985.

Miniature Stellar Pelargonium "Cowes"
Another of Brian West’s raisings named after a place on the Isle of Wight, where he was from.   Pelargonium "Cowes" is a miniature stellar pelargonium.   The semi double flowers are palest pink with darker shading which contrast  well against the dark green star shaped leaves.   Pelargonium "Cowes" is a cross between ‘Bresh’ and ‘Chelsea Star’.

On my visit to Australia last year to visit my family, one of the last highlights was helping at the South Australian Geranium & Pelargonium Society Annual Show.   The show is held over a weekend, so Friday afternoon the halls are set up ready for members of the public on Saturday and Sunday.

The Society, like many others, is losing members, so this year they show took a different form.  Members of the Society were asked to bring along a plant, or plants, in pots or hanging baskets, to display around the hall and in the middle.  Single blooms were also displayed.    Marj. Edwards, a well known Australian hybridiser, was asked to judge the entries and I was honoured in that she asked me to help her.  She had made her selection, so I went around with her and made my own selection. Amazingly we chose the same two plants and it was just a question then of choosing the best one.  Regal Pelargonium ‘Rembrandt’ won, and sadly I did not take a photo of it, or the grower.

Dwarf Zonal Pelargonium "Mary Spink"

With light gold foliage and double salmon flower heads, the dwarf zonal pelargonium “Mary Spink” makes a stunning plant.   Pelargonium “Mary Spink” was introduced about 1992, and named after owner of Swanland Nursery, a well known pelargonium nursery here in the UK.

Mary was also the last President of the former British and European Geranium Society, now merged with The British Pelargonium and Geranium Society to become ThePelargonium and Geranium Society.

I last wrote about the South Australian Geranium and Pelargonium Society Inc Annual Show.  At the Show each year they also hold a huge sale of pelargoniums which is very popular with local gardeners.  I had a wonderful three days helping to set up the show and the sale and selling plants.   Here are just a few views of the sale.

Little Gem - Scented Leaf Pelargonium

In the dark chilly days of winter the scented pelargoniums come into their own.  No flowers I admit then, but pick one up and you are immediately transported to balmy summer days.    One of my favourites is LittleGem. This is a dwarf plant with abundant small deep rose-lavender flowers in summer.  The leaves are greyish green and incised and said to have the scent of oil of turpentine, but I find it quite pleasant and mild.  Little Gem is possibly a P.graveolens derivative and was introduced by Cannell's Nursery in the UK in 1910.

Angel Pelargonium "Rockwell Sophie"
This is a new plant to me - I was given a cutting last year, and it has yet to flower.  "Rockwell Sophie" was introduced in 2010 by M.Darch,   My photograph was taken last year at Fibrex Nurseries.  The lower flowers of "Rockwell Sophie" are a dark pink with a hint of mauve and a dark blotch and with darker upper petals.  What makes this Angel Pelargonium stand out are the leaves - an unusual bright golden colour which do not fade or darken over the year.

Dwarf Zonal Pelargonium "Angelique"

When I first started growing pelargoniums seriously some twenty-five odd years ago (as opposed to buying a few zonals from the garden centre and putting them in planters in the summer), the dwarf zonal pelargonium "Angelique" was one of my first purchases.   I loved the clean rich dark pink colour of the double flowers, and the fact that it was a compact dwarf plant.  The leaves are a mid-green with a slightly darker zone.  It was a new variety then, and I still grow it. It was introduced by a Mr Maudsley in 1987. In the greenhouse it is now just coming into flower.  It's a bit straggly and I need to take a few cuttings.   I should have done this at the end of last summer, and in fact, I have several that need to be cut back and cuttings taken.but I was away for most of September and October, and life just got busy, as it does.  It's not too late, and I have already started taking a few cuttings off several plants.

Golden tri-coloured zonal "Wirral Sunlight"

Introduced by Ken Lea, "Wirral Sunlight" is a golden tri-coloured zonal pelargonium.  At this time of year, the coloured leaves are always at their best.

Ken Lea has introduced several pelargoniums with the pre-fix 'Wirral' which is a peninsula in North West England, close to Liverpool. The River Dee is to the West, forming a boundary with Wales, and on the East is the River Mersey and the North is the Irish Sea.  The area is often referred to as The Wirral.
